I am a freshman this year. When, can I start borrowing books?

  • Complete the two prerequisites below for borrowing. They should be completed  before the end of September for each year.
  1. Wait for the Office of Academic Affairs to completes your enrolment information. Once completed  your information will be automatically transferred to the library automation system.
  2. You should received your student card.

How many items can I borrow materials from the library, and how long is the loan period?

  • The return date of items is based on the due date listed in the library system. The loan periods for general books (stored in the library on the fourth or fifth floor) and children's books are as follows

What does shorten loan period mean

  • If another user reserves a book upon checking out, the loan period will be shortened to 14 days. However, the loan period will not be shortened if another user reserves the book after it has been checked out.

How to avoid overdue fines for books

  1. Please go to the Office of Library and Information Technology (LIT) website to access “View Your Patron Record.” Then enter either student ID number, staff ID number, or library card number issued by LIT. Your default password is your ID number.
  2. Renewal=> If no one reserves the book, borrowers can renew the loaned books 5 days on or before the due date using the system for online renewal.  There is no limit to the number of renewals for teachers. Renewal of other identities is limited to 2 times.
  3. You will receive emails from the school reminding you of the books soon to be overdue, regularly check the notices sent by Circ Email Notices, and return the book as quickly as possible.
  4. Returning books by registered mail: the library will use the postmark date as the return date.

How the library notifies you that your book is overdue

  • All overdue notices will be sent by e-mail using the school account.

Can Course Reserves be checked out from the library

  1. Course Reserves can be checked out from the library, but the loan period is only for a day. Course Reserves are displayed in the Reference Collection area on the second floor, and they are non-renewable and cannot be reserved.
  2. If the Course Reserve is overdue, a daily fine of NT$5 per book will be charged; for two days or more, computations will be cumulative.
    *Instructors place required and/or recommended materials on Course Reserve for class use.

I'm in a hurry to look for a book, can you tell me who borrowed it

  • To protect the borrower's privacy and ensure an uninterrupted borrowing period, the borrower’s personal information will not be made publicly available.

The book I want to borrow is still being cataloged; when will it be available

  • If the book status is “in process”, you can fill the  “Priority for Not-Yet-On-Shelf Books Application Form.” The library will prioritize the processing and notify of its availability after completing the catalog.

  • If you forget your password and cannot check your borrowing status, please send an e-mail indicating your name and Stud ID number  to  zlin@mail.ntou.edu.tw. The library staff will help you reset the password!

How can alumni borrow books

  • Please contact the Alumni Service Center to apply for an Alumni Library Card to borrow books from the library. The Alumni Service Center is located on the 2nd floor of the Administration Building, Tel: (02) 24622192 ext. 1251 or 1250, Fax: (02) 24634096.

How to reserve books

  • When you search the library catalog, and the book you want to borrow has been checked out, you can select the function “Request” on the screen. First, input your ID number (student ID or staff ID) and password (ID number). Then click Send and choose the book you want to reserve. Next, click Request Selected Item. The reservation is successful when the screen says, "Your request will be delivered to the library when available."

How long does it take for my book reservation to be canceled by the library

  • Once the book is returned, the book reservation will be kept for five days, starting when the previous borrower returned the book. After that, the "Pickup Notice" will be sent to the next borrower’s school e-mail. If the book is not claimed within the allowable time, the book will be given to the person next in line. If the book is not reserved, it will be returned to the shelf.

Which books are not available for reservation

  • The following books are not available for reservations: reference collection, map, books on the shelf, books borrowed by oneself, cataloging, ordering, reference books, bound periodicals, and audio-visual materials.

How to renew books online

  • When the borrowing period is about to expire, and the book on a loan is not requested, the current borrower can renew the book online five days on or before the due date. The new due date will be calculated using the renewal date; There is no limit to the number of renewals for teachers. Renewal of other identities is limited to 2 times.
  • How to renew books online: Please go to the library catalog→View Your Patron Record→Enter the ID number(student ID/staff ID)→Select the item you want to renew and click “SORT Renew all“ or “Renew Selected.” The renewal request is completed when the status shows the new due date.

How many times can I renew my books

  • If others have not reserved the borrowed book, it can be renewed online. (You can only renew the book five days on or before the due date.) There is no limit to the number of renewals for teachers. Renewal of other identities is limited to 2 times.

Under what circumstances can I not renew a book

  1. Borrowed materials are Course Reserves, bound periodicals, audio-visual materials, or other materials loanable for only one day.
  2. The book has been reserved.
  3. The book has been renewed twice. (There is no such limit for teachers.)
  4. Readers currently have overdue books or fines that have not been paid.
  5. Individuals are suspended, violated regulations, or have their personal data temporarily halted for any reason.
  6. Not within five days on or before the due date.

Why does the library catalog show the message TOO MANY RENEWALS or TOO SOON TO RENEW when renewing books online

  1. You must renew books within five days on or before the due date. If you renew your book earlier than five days before the due date, the system will display an alert of “TOO SOON TO RENEW.”
  2. If the same book has been renewed twice, you can no longer renew that book online. The system will show “TOO MANY RENEWALS” as a reminder to readers of the book's unavailability for renewal; this also further implies returning the book before the due date.

Can I use the library Wi-Fi? How do I set it up

  • You can use the available WIFI facilities in the library. You can log in using the following information:
    WIFI Name: NTOU
    Account Name: student ID
    Password: Your birthday (YYYYMMDD) or passport number.

If I forget to bring my student card/staff card, can I enter the library

  • You can still use your other available identification, such as an ID card, driver's license, or health insurance card, to enter the library.  Contact the information desk at the second floor entrance to give you a card replacement guest card as an alternate.

Can I bring food and drink inside the library

  1. Bringing food or beverages is strictly prohibited to maintain the library's cleanliness and the reading materials' excellent condition. Violators will be suspended for one month of access to the facility. If you have dietary needs, you can go to the reading room on the first floor of the library.
  2. If readers feel thirsty after entering the library, the library has a water dispenser, so it is recommended to bring a bottle container.

Can I bring my cell phone to the library

  • To avoid disturbing other readers in the library, if you need to bring your cell phone into the library, please set your cell phone to silent mode. Such a gesture will be highly regarded.

What should I do if my student/staff card is lost and books are borrowed fraudulently

  • Lost student/staff cards must be reported to the library immediately to enable the library to halt the personal information and prevent further fraudulent use. The owner of the lost card will still be responsible for the borrowed books before reporting the missing card.
  • Since books cannot be borrowed during the halting period, it is recommended to apply to the Division of Registration and Curriculum to reissue a new student/staff card during working hours so that the borrower’s information and access to the services will be restored.

I used the library catalog to search for a book, and the system showed that the book was on the shelf. So, I went to the library to check, but I couldn't find the book.

  • As the initial procedure, you could fill out a “missing item search form” at the counter on the 2nd floor of the library. The missing item will be tracked and searched by the staff of the Division of Circulation Services. In principle, the search will be at least once a week or a maximum of three times a week. The library will issue a "Book Reservation Notice for Borrowing" to the applicant's school e-mail account if the material is found. The applicant must go to the library to borrow the book within the retention period. Failing to pick up the book within the allowable time will suspend the applicant from borrowing for a month except for the reservation. If the book remains unfound for a month, the library will send a "Book Reservation Cancellation Notice" to the applicant's e-mail account.

How many theses must I submit to the library when I graduate

  • One copy only, and please hand it to the library counter when you go through the school leaving procedure.

I need a book which is not available in the library. What can I do to get this book

  1. You can borrow books from other libraries through the "Interlibrary Loan" services.
  2. You can recommend purchasing the book by filling in the “Recommend books” form online. Teaching and research book purchases will be given priority, and the library reserves the right to review such recommendations. Pirated reprints and pocketbooks (with a height of 19 cm or less) are not accepted. The result of the processing will be notified by email.

Where are the periodicals in the library

  • Current and bound periodicals are located on the 3th floor.

Can journals be borrowed

  • Journals are not available for borrowing, but those with special requests can only borrow them for one day; current issues cannot be borrowed. 

How do I borrow book/journal attachments? (e.g. CD/DVD)?

  • Please go to the circulation counter on the library's second floor to borrow attachments.

Are there any orientation activities to introduce library services

Yes, the library conducts “Library Orientation” regularly and sometimes when necessary or when requested. Topics covered in the orientation activity include library collections and services, how to use electronic resources, and Interlibrary Loan.   • Regular course:
  1. From August to December every year, library educational courses are held for the first-year students, including an introduction to library services (including library catalog query), an introduction to the use of electronic resources, subject-related and general electronic resource retrieval, an introduction to National Document Delivery Services and interlibrary loan, etc.
  • By-demand or by-request course:
  1. Educational training for specific databases or systems: Trainers from the database company are invited to the school for user training.
  2. If there are more than five people who urgently need to learn using the library resources or databases, students can make an appointment or request. What is the reasonable use of electronic resources

  • Use them only for personal academic research or teaching purposes; no commercial activities are allowed. 
  • Do not continuously, massively, and systematically copy, download, or print files in any form. 
  • Do not inform others of your password.
  • Do not use any format, through any storage medium, transmit, disseminate and provide all or part of the physical and electronic data to non-school staff and students. 
  • In addition to the above, any direct or indirect disregard or breaking of each publisher's regulations and copyright notices is a violation.

How to connect to use the library database

  1. For on-campus access, you can use Discovery Service to search for databases.
  2. Please check the “Setting up Off-campus Access” first for off-campus access. Then connect your computer’s IP address.
  3. If it is indicated that it is limited to on-campus use and that an account application is required, please follow the instructions to use it.

How to get the full text of journal articles?

  • Go to the LIT website→E-Resources→Discovery Services. Check if an electronic version of the full text is available for download.
  • Go to the LIT website→Library Catalog→Check if there are  Journals available for photocopying.
    If you still can’t find anything, it is recommended to obtain the full text through the Nationwide Document Delivery Service (NDDS)”.

What is Interlibrary Loan

  • Libraries have established a cooperation model for mutual exchange and resource sharing called “Interlibrary Loan.” Through this service, any part of the system can apply for copying documents and borrowing books from domestic and foreign units to compensate for the library collections shortage. 

How to apply for off-campus resources through “Nationwide Document Delivery Service (NDDS)”

    →Librarian reviews your account→Account approval
    →Request a photocopy or loan for a book →After the materials arrive at the library, the system will send an email notification for pick up. The photocopy is free, but there is a fee to be charged for a book loan.

What is the Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

  • To broaden and enrich the NTOU library resources, the library has signed contracts with other libraries to provide free book loan services and better information services on campus. Applicants need to bring their student/staff cards to the Office of Reference Services (2nd floor), then an ILL card issued by cooperative libraries will be provided. Make sure to borrow and return books within the allowable period. For more information, see Interlibrary Loan.

How can I attend the library orientation session

  • The library orientation sessions are held regularly or by demand or request. The regular ones are the "Freshman Orientation" for the first-year students from the undergraduate and graduate levels of the university. The by-demand orientation is based on resource persons' needs, requests, or availability. Trainers from the database company are invited to the school for user training. The information about the library orientation session is posted on the LIT website. (LIT website→HELP / GUIDE→Library Instruction Class), and make sure to be on watch of the latest news.

I want to make copies or print them in the library, do I need to buy a photocopy card? Who can I ask if I have problems with the operation

  • Library offers a self-service photocopying and printing service located on the second floor of Library I. The service accepts multiple payment methods, including EasyCard, iPass, Credit card, and Mobile. The detailed operation steps are available in the information retrieval area. For questions, feel free to contact the Information Counter. 

I am an adjunct teacher. Can I use the library e-resources

  1. Adjunct teachers can use the library e-resources.
  2. To access the e-Resources off-campus, please refer to the Setting up Off-campus Access.

I am an alumnus; can I use the e-Resources of the library

  1. The alumni can use the school's email account but not the library's e-Resources.
  2. Even alumni who have applied for an alumni library card are not given access to use the library's e-Resources.
